10 Excellent Open Source and Free Alternatives to PhotoShop

Adobe Photoshop is a given in any designer’s wish list, and it comes with a host of features that allow for excellent and professional photo editing. The biggest obstacle to any designer who wants Photoshop is the price, which can be prohibitive. Fortunately there are a number of open source (and completely free) programs out there that do much of what Photoshop can, and sometimes more.
In this collection, you will find 10 excellent examples of open source and free alternatives to Adobe Photoshop.

1. GIMP

GIMP stands for “GNU image manipulation program”, and it is one of the oldest and most well known alternatives to Photoshop in existence. Although it doesn’t quite have all of them, you’ll find most of the features included in Photoshop somewhere in GIMP. GIMP is cross platform and supported by a large community.
If just having the feature set isn’t enough for you, there is an alternative based on GIMP known as GIMPShop. It’s the same as GIMP, except the layout has been structured as close to Photoshop as possible, so anyone making the transition should still feel right at home.

2. Krita

Krita has been lauded for ease of use and won the Akademy Award for Best Application in 2006. Part of the Koffice suite for Linux, Krita is slightly less powerful than both Photoshop and GIMP, but does contain some unique features.

3. Paint.NET

Paint.NET has grown out of a simple replacement for the well known MSPaint into a fully featured open source image editor with a wide support base. You’ll need Windows to run Paint.NET.

4. ChocoFlop

ChocoFlop is a design application designed exclusively for Mac, optimized for Mac architecture. It’s quick and fairly well featured. This program won’t always be free, but until a stable version is released (it’s currently in beta) they are allowing free use. The program works pretty well as is, and if you’re the type who doesn’t mind an occasional bug it’s certainly worth a look.

5. Cinepaint

Cinepaint is designed primarily for video often used to make animated feature films by major studios, but it is also a great image editor capable of high fidelity 32 bit color. Currently there is no stable version for Windows.

6. Pixia

Pixia was originally designed in Japanese but English versions now exist for this rich editor. Although the original focus was on anime/manga, it is a very capable editor in general. Some of the features are a little counter intuitive, but there are plenty of English tutorials available now if you want to give it a shot. The website seems to have changed recently, so be sure to use our link if you don’t want a Japanese error message. Pixia works for Windows.

7. Pixen

Pixen is designed as a pixel artist’s dream, but has expanded into a smooth and well featured overall editor. It’s definitely best at animation though, if that’s your style. Pixen is Mac (10.4x or later) only.

8. Picnik

Picnik is a web based photo editor that has recently taken off due to a partnership with Flickr. It has all the basic features plus a few advanced ones like layers and special effects. It is cross platform since you only need a browser.

9. Splashup

Another web based application, Splashup has a strong set of features (including those layers) and will remind you somewhat of Photoshop. It integrates easily with photo sharing websites and just like the above, is cross platform.

10. Adobe Photoshop Express

Adobe actually has a free web based photo editor of their own. It has all the basic functionality you’d expect as well as a few advanced features (sadly though, no layers), and interfaces well with a number of photo sharing websites. Again, completely cross platform.

Google Public DNS Servers

Google has announced the launch of their free DNS resolution service. Many ISPs and 3rd party provider such as OpenDNS snoops around or send traffic to ad servers. However, Google promises not to play with end users and send the exact response his or her computer expects without performing any blocking, filtering, or redirection that may hamper a user's browsing experience. In other words Google will not hijacking your traffic on non-existent domain name and it will follow strict RFC standard.

The DNS protocol is an important part of the web's infrastructure, serving as the Internet's "phone book". Every time you visit a website, your computer performs a DNS lookup. Complex pages often require multiple DNS lookups before they complete loading. As a result, the average Internet user performs hundreds of DNS lookups each day, that collectively can slow down his or her browsing experience.

How Do I Add Google DNS Server IP Address Under Linux?

Simple edit the /etc/resolv.conf file and add above two ip address:

Save and close the file. Google do have clear cut privacy policy and speed also seems good to me as compare to my ISP. I guess the people at OpenDNS are going to be pi**ed by this.

In other words I will use my ISPs server instead of Google or OpenDNS due to speed issue and incorrect handling of CDN servers. If you own a small LAN, I recommend setting up a caching dns server called dnsmasq.

A. Often many users and running daemon can perform tons of dns lookup. This can create problems for slow network connections as well the latency of the lookup can slow down overall experince for end users. For large sites / LANs / WANs it is recommended that you set your own caching dns servers.

dnsmasq dns caching server

dnsmasq is a lightweight DNS, TFTP and DHCP server. It is intended to provide coupled DNS and DHCP service to a LAN. Dnsmasq accepts DNS queries and either answers them from a small, local, cache or forwards them to a real, recursive, DNS server.

Step # 1: Install dnsmasq

Simply, type the following command under Debian / Ubuntu Linux:
# apt-get install dnsmasq
Red Hat, Fedora / CentOS Linux user can grab dnsmasq rpm here or just enter:
# rpm -ivh http://dag.wieers.com/rpm/packages/dnsmasq/dnsmasq-2.41-1.el5.rf.x86_64.rpm

Step # 2: Configure dnsmasq

Open /etc/resolv.conf
# vi /etc/resolv.conf
Set up upstream DNS servername i.e add ISP name server:

nameserver 202.1.10.10
nameserver 203.2.10.10
nameserver 203.3.10.10

Save and close the file. Start dnsmasq dns caching server:
# /etc/init.d/dnsmasq start

Step # 3: Optional dnsmasq configuration

The default configuration file is located at /etc/dnsmasq.conf. By default it works out of box. However, configuration files offers more options. It is possible to use dnsmasq to block Web advertising by using a list of known banner-ad servers, all resolving to 127.0.0.1 or 0.0.0.0. It is also possible redirect local LAN mail traffic to central mail hub server. Please refer dnsmasq man pages for all advanced configuration options.

Linux : Recover Root Password

A common problem faced by new users ( and sometimes even experienced users ) is not knowing what to do when they lose their password.

Even worse, when they lose the password for 'root'. Luckily, there are several solutions to help you recover access to your system.
Root Password - Easy Method:

The simplest way to recover from a lost password is to boot into single user mode.
If you are using LILO, at the LILO boot prompt (graphical LILO users can press Ctrl-x to exit the graphical screen and go to the boot: prompt), enter:

This will make you the "root" user without asking for a password. Once the system has booted, you can change the root password using the password command:

passwdThe instructions for GRUB users are similar. Press 'e' at the GRUB prompt to select boot parameters. Select the line for the kernel you want to boot, and go to the end of it. Add "single" as a separate word, and then press ENTER to exit the edit mode. Once back at the GRUB screen, press "b" to boot into single user mode.
If for whatever reason, the above solution doesn't work for you, there is another option. Boot using a so called "Live CD" Linux distribution, such as Knoppix. For the purposes of this example, it will be assumed that the user is using Knoppix.After booting up from the Knoppix CD, go to a terminal and su to root (no password is required). After your priviledges have been escalated, issue the following commands (be sure to replace each /hda1 with your own root ('/') partition):

Gmail, Orkut and a few other Google services offer transliteration facility by default so you can easily type characters in Hindi, Tamil & other popular Indian languages using the standard English (Roman) keyboard.
Here’s a quick demo of transliteration - you type Hindi words phonetically in English script and tool will automatically convert them into corresponding Hindi words.

Indic transliteration tools are pretty useful for typing text in Indian languages without having to memorize any complex sequence of characters but the problem is that not all websites support transliteration yet. For instance, if you need to edit a Hindi entry in Wikipedia or need to type a document in Telugu using Google Docs, it may not be that straight forward a process if you are used to the English keyboard.
Well not anymore. Google has released some useful transliteration bookmarklets that will help you type characters in your language on any website. These bookmarklets are available for Hindi, Arabic, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
That means you can now write Hindi messages in Google Chat using English keys or update Facebook status in your native language or even leave comments in an Arabic blog. How to Open Password Protected PDF Documents

There are sometimes genuine reasons to unlock or crack a password protected PDF file. You have the legal right to open the encrypted PDF document but forgot the password like in the case below.

Say one of your former colleague created some critical sales reports in PDF format but he is not working with the company anymore. In his absence, you have no option but to crack the PDF password in order to open, read or print these PDF files.

There are basically two types of PDF protection - the original PDF creator can either restrict opening the PDF file itself or he can restrict others from modifying, printing or copying text and graphics from the PDF file. Here are a few possible workarounds:

When there are Copying or Printing Restrictions..

Say you want to print a couple of pages from the PDF document but the document settings won't let you do that.

Open the document in Acrobat Reader or Foxit and capture the PDF page as an image using any free screen capture software. If there are multiple pages, you may try Snag IT since it can autoscroll and capture multiple pages of the document in one-go.

If you want to copy just a portion of text from some PDF page, use a screen capture tool with OCR features (like Kleptomania, Capture Text discussed here)

Alternatively, you can invest in commercial solutions like Advanced PDF Password Recovery from ElcomSoft and PDF Password Remover from Very PDF.

(These utilities may not recover the password for you - they'll just remove the restrictions from the password protected file)

When there are Document Opening Restrictions..

This is a very tricky case and there's no straight-forward solution to read PDF documents that are password-protected at the Open level.

The software will use methods like Brute Force, Key Search and Dictionary Attack to guess the password. They will try to use all possible character combinations as the password and so the process might take hours or even days and would really depend on your computer's processing power.

Advanced PDF Password Recovery Professional edition from ElcomSoft is a recommended option. When (if) the password is found, the program shows it, as well as the number of passwords which have been tested, and the program speed.

Legal Issues: - you maybe surprised to learn that these PDF password cracking software are absolutely legal and Microsoft even awarded ElcomSoft a Gold Certified Partner status.

How to Translate PDF & Word Documents

Say dad bought you a digital camera from Japan but the problem is that the PDF manual that came with the camera is also written in Japanese.
How do you quickly translate that PDF file into an English document ?

Solution: If the PDF document is not Password Protection you can easily convert it into another language via Google Translate.
The idea is that you extract the text from the PDF file and pass it to Google Translate. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open Zoho Viewer upload the file(s). Other than PDF, you may also upload common Office file formats like doc, xls and ppt.
Step 2: Zoho Viewer provides a unique URL for each of your web document. Go to Google Translate, type that web address, select a language pair and hit the Translate button. Voilà!
Important: If the source document is multi-lingual, you should considering uploading to Slideshare since they handle foreign languages slightly better than Zoho Viewer. See a sample document from Zoho and Slideshare.
Slideshare will create a text transcript of your PDF document that can you pass on to Google Translate for converting into another language.
You may even extract text from PDF documents using Adobe Reader itself but again, this program doesn’t work too well with all languages.

Important steps when cleaning virus

When you are putting scan for viruses you have to disable system restore. Windows XP backups your system at times, so that you can revert back to the working condition if your system is not working after installing X software. You can select the restore point before that day you installed that X software, so your system can work normally.

If your system has a virus, your windows might unknowingly already backed up the virus with other files. Your Anti Virus software can not remove virus from these backed up files because windows is protecting them. So, after your Anti Virus scans and cleans rest of the system, the virus can start spreading again from those backed up files.

So, first turn off the system restore in all drives before starting the scanning. You can do this by going to system properties(either through control panel, or by right clicking on My Computer icon). Then go to System Restore > Turn Off. You can hit the Win + Pause on the keyboard to bring up the System Properties.

And every time scan your system by booting into safe mode because when started in safe mode, windows loads minimal files to start the system.

Cleaned amvo.exe virus manually

Today I got one virus in my system. When I try to login to the Yahoo messenger, it is closing without logging in. I have found a virus (don't know name) and cleaned it manually. I have taken the below steps to remove this virus manually.

First I have checked in task manager, I didn't find any suspicious processes.
Next I opened MSConfig (Go to run, and type msconfig). I have found one process with the name amvo.exe under the startup tab. It is located in Windows\System32 folder.
I unchecked the process, and closed the msconfig window.
Next I open Registry Editor (go to run, and type regedit). I have searched for "amvo.exe" and found one entry. I have deleted the whole key.
Next I have tried to set the option to "show hidden files" (Go to Tools> View in windows explorer), as virus file is hidden. But it is not allowing me. As soon as I set it to show hidden files and clicked on ok, it is changing back to "Don't show hidden files".
Then I have used Bullet Proof FTP software to browse the local disk, because it shows all files even hidden files. (I have already installed FTP software in my system. You can get free trial version from the website.)
Then I have browsed to Windows\System32 folder, and deleted amvo.exe, amvo0.dll, amvo1.dll.
This virus put an Autorun.inf file, and .cmd file in every drive's root. I have removed all those.

Thats it. Virus was cleaned. Now, I am able to use my messenger.

Don't forget to disable system restore before starting the cleaning process, and open windows in safe mode.

Update: I built two files to clean this virus automatically. After downloading the AMVO Cleaner, unzip the file to get a folder. Open that folder, and double click on the file named AMVO_Delete. It should have cleaned the virus. Please let me know whether your problem solved in the comments section below.

Open Services window (Win+R and type services.msc or you can go to control panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools, Services).

Registry Accessing disabled?

Many viruses disable the access to the registry so that we can't remove the virus entries in the registry. In these cases you can download the following file UnHookExec.inf. After downloaded, right click on the file, and select Install.

You can enable it manually by editing the group policy editor. Go to Windows > Run > gpEdit.msc
Go to User Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Prevent Access to Registry Editing Tools. Disable it. You should be able to open regedit now.

I have got a virus, which automatically opening the Yahoo messenger. So, when I have looked the processes in the task manager, I have found the following processes Fun.exe, dc.exe, SVIQ.exe.

I killed those processes, by right clicking the process and select "End Process Tree". After I have killed all those processes, I searched Internet and found the following link W32.Imaut.AS (also called Dung Coi). Then I have deleted all the virus files and cleaned the registry.

I am describing the exact steps below:

First go to the task manager (right click on the task bar > task manager) and select the processes tab.
Right click on the Fun.exe, dc.exe, SVIQ.exe and select "End Process Tree". This stops the viruses from interrupting in the cleanup process.
Go to the MSConfig (Win+R, type MSConfig and press enter). Go to the startup tab. Uncheck the dc.exe, fun.exe, SVIQ.exe, Other.exe, Win.exe. This stop the virus processes from starting with the windows.
Next go to the Registry Editor (Win+R, type RegEdit and press enter). Remove the following keys

dc, dc2k5, fun under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
load, run under the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows
Go to the key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon and Modify Shell's value to "Explorer.exe".
Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\dc
Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\dc2k5
Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Fun
Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Load
Remove HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\Run

Delete the following files.

I have created two files to automate the process of deleting the Registry keys, and the virus files. Download Fun Virus Removal tool, unzip it. Double click on the RemoveVirus.bat file.

Thats it. I got rid from the virus. I read in the net that this virus will create a copy of virus file in directories with the same name and uses a folder icon, so that users will click on it thinking it was a folder. But, I dint get any files like that, if you got any files like that, don't click on them, delete them immediately. If you have any doubt, right click on that and select properties, then you can know whether it is a file or folder.

Solution : Unmountable Boot Volume Error !!

Problem :
When booting up to Windows XP you may get an error that reads: Unmountable Boot Volume.
Cause : This is probably because your boot.ini file is messed up.
Solution :

1. Start Windows XP with the Windows XP CD in your CD/DVD drive.2. Once you see the "Welcome to setup" message, press the letter 'R' on your keyboard to enter the Recovery Console.3. Select the Windows installation to be repaired (Administrator password required)4. You will then get a DOS prompt. From here type: chkdsk /p [Enter]5. When that is done type: fixboot [Enter]6. Type: Y at the next prompt [Enter]7. Then type: exit [Enter]8. The system will now reboot into Windows.
If for some reason that didn't work, you can boot to the recovery console (STEP 2)
Type: chkdsk /r [Enter]
When done type: exit [Enter].
This takes a bit longer, but the system should boot back into Windows.

Error message: "Virtual memory minimum is too low. Windows is increasing the size of the virtual memory paging file."
Solution :

The virtual memory is the space your computer uses when it runs short of RAM memory. The paging file is the place where Windows handles your virtual memory settings. If your computer wants to change it, you should go ahead and let it because XP will adjust the setting to meet the current memory needs. I do not recommend changing these settings manually as Windows can manage the size much more efficiently than the user can. Making your virtual memory setting larger will increase the number of addresses and will make Windows lazy.
Adding more RAM may also be of benefit as this will reduce the need for virtual memory to be used in the first place. For running Windows XP, I suggest at least 384MB. In general, adding more RAM is the most cost effective means of boosting a computer's performance.
I recommend buying quality RAM from a reputable company. Some cheap (unbranded) RAM can on occasion be defective resulting in 'unexplained' crashes or freezes. Brands to look for are Mushkin, Crucial and Kingston.

The program is called BootVis

This will reboot your computer and provide a benchmark

After the reboot, BootVis will take a minute or two to show graphs of your system startup.

Note how much time it takes for your system to load (click on the red vertical line)

Then run Trace / Optimize System

Re-Run the Next Boot + Drive Delays

Note how much the time has decreased

Mine went from approximately 33 to 25 seconds.

Increasing Graphics Performance

By default, WindowsXP turns on a lot of shadows, fades, slides etc to menu items.Most simply slow down their display.

There are many things you can play with in Windows Operating System. The normal process to shut down the system is: To click Start - Turn off Computer - Turn Off. However this is not the only way to shut the system down. You can shut down your system with only one click. Here's how:
Navigate to your desktop. On the desktop, right-click and go to New, then to Shortcut (in other words, create a new shortcut). You should now see a pop-up window instructing you to enter a command line path. Use the following path in "Type Location of the Item"

SHUTDOWN -s -t 01

If the C: drive is not your local hard drive, then replace "C" with the correct letter of the hard drive. Click the "Next" button. Name the shortcut and click the "Finish" button. Now whenever you want to shut down, just click on this shortcut and you're done.
You can also setup a TIMER for shutting down the system. Here's how:
Method 1:
Right click on your desktop and choose "New=>shortcuts". In the box that says "Type the location of the shortcut", type in "shutdown -s -t 3600" without the quotation marks and click next. Note: 3600 are the amount of seconds before your computer shuts down. So, 60secs*60mins=3600secs.
Make up a name for the shortcut and you're done. You can change the icon by right clicking=>properities=>change icon=>browse
To Abort This Process:
To make an abort key to stop the shutdown timer just create another shortcut and make the "location of the shortcut" to " shutdown -a" without the quotes.
Method 2:
Here is another trick to shutdown at a specific time, for example you wish to shutdown at 11:35am. Type this in

Step 1: Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scrolldown and look for the following entries:
network.http.pipeliningnetwork.http.proxy.pipeliningnetwork.http.pipelining.maxrequests
Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time.When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which reallyspeeds up page loading.

Step 2: Alter the entries as follows:
Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"
Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

Step 3: Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer.Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0".This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it recieves.

B. Download the BIOS file

•Download the correct BIOS file by clicking on the file name of the BIOS file you wish to download.

If you don't have an "unzip" utility, download the WinZip for Windows 95 shareware/ evaluation copy for that one time use from _www.winzip.com or _www.pkware.com. Most CD ROMs found in computer magazines, have a shareware version of WinZip on them.

•You should have extracted two files:

Flash BIOS utility eg: flash7265.exe (for example)

BIOS eg: 6152J900.bin (example)

Use the latest flash utility available unless otherwise specified (either on the BIOS update page or in the archive file). This information is usually provided.

C. Upgrade the System BIOS

During boot up, write down the old BIOS version because you will need to use it for the BIOS backup file name.

Place the bootable floppy disk containing the BIOS file and the Flash Utility in drive a, and reboot the system in MS-DOS, preferably Version 6.22

•At the A:> prompt, type the corresponding Flash BIOS utility and the BIOS file with its extension.

For example:

flash625 615j900.bin

•From the Flash Memory Writer menu, select "Y" to "Do you want to save BIOS?" if you want to save (back up) your current BIOS (strongly recommended), then type the name of your current BIOS and its extension after FILE NAME TO SAVE: eg: a:\613J900.bin

Alternatively select "N" if you don't want to save your current BIOS. Beware, though, that you won't be able to recover from a possible failure.

•Select "Y" to "Are you sure to program?"

•Wait until it displays "Message: Power Off or Reset the system"

Once the BIOS has been successfully loaded, remove the floppy disk and reboot the system. If you write to BIOS but cannot complete the procedure, do not switch off, because the computer will not be able to boo, and you will not be given another chance to flash. In this case leave your system on until you resolve the problem (flashing BIOS with old file is a possible solution, provided you've made a backup before)

Make sure the new BIOS version has been loaded properly by taking note of the BIOS identifier as the system is rebooting.

For AMI BIOS
Once the BIOS has been successfully loaded, remove the floppy disk and reboot the system holding the "END" key prior to power on until you enter CMOS setup. If you do not do this the first time booting up after upgrading the BIOS, the system will hang.

BIOS Update Tips:
1.Make sure never to turn off or reset your computer during the flash process. This will corrupt the BIOS data. We also recommend that you make a copy of your current BIOS on the bootable floppy so you can reflash it if you need to. (This option is not available when flashing an AMI BIOS).

2. If you have problems installing your new BIOS please check the following:

Have you done a clean boot?
In other words, did you follow the above procedure for making a bootable floppy? This ensures that when booting from "A" there are no device drivers on the diskette. Failing to do a clean boot is the most common cause for getting a "Memory Insufficient" error message when attempting to flash a BIOS.

If you have not used a bootable floppy, insure a clean boot either by

a) pressing F5 during bootup

b) by removing all device drivers on the CONFIG.SYS including the HIMEM.SYS. Do this by using the EDIT command.

Have you booted up under DOS?
Booting in Windows is another common cause for getting a "Memory Insufficient" error message when attempting to flash a BIOS. Make sure to boot up to DOS with a minimum set of drivers. Important: Booting in DOS does not mean selecting "Restart computer in MS-DOS Mode" from Windows98/95 shutdown menu or going to Prompt mode in WindowsNT, but rather following the above procedure (format a: /s and rebooting from a:\).

Have you entered the full file name of the flash utility and the BIOS plus its extension?
Do not forget that often you will need to add a drive letter (a:\) before flashing the BIOS. Example: when asked for file name of new BIOS file which is on your floppy disk, in case you're working from c:\ your will need to type a:\615j900.bin, rather than 615j900.bin only.

How to Know if Your Computer Have Spyware / Ad-ware / Viruses

Usually, the easiest way to tell you have spyware is because your PC is running at a reduced speed. The other way to check is to hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE and hit task manager (if you have windows service pack 2. If you have before SP2, then this should automatically bring up the task manager).

Once the task manager is open, check your running processes under the “Processes” tab. If you see a lot of strange processes running you don’t recognize, you likely are infected with spyware, ad-ware or viruses.
An example of strange processes would be a fgkosk.exe or copies of the same process running twice. Some “smart” spyware can actually disguise itself as other windows processes - you can tell this if you have copies of processes running. Don’t end task anything you’re not sure of - besides, most of these files are actually able to resume themselves after you close them as they’re in your windows registry.
You could also download a program that checks for these infected files, such as Avast, Ad-Aware, etc. Check my other article on “what to do once you have spyware” for a list of good programs to use.
The best way to get rid of spyware, ad-ware, or viruses once you have them is either to use a program made for doing exactly that. Failing that, you could format your PC. Sometimes, an infestation becomes so bad you may have troubles downloading, installing, or running a program that can help.

A successful trick works in Windows 2000 and Windows XP.Following are the steps required to pull off this nice piece of trick.

1. Select any file you wish.

2. Right-click the file and click Rename or just press the F2 key to rename it.

3. Press and hold the ALT key. While still holding the Alt key, type the numbers 0160 from the keyboard.(Note: The numbers must be typed from the numpad of your keyboard. i.e the number keys present on the right side of the keyboard and NOT from the number keys present above the top of character keys.)

4. The file will be without a name

What happens here is, the file is named with a single space.If you want to create a second file without a name in the same directory as the first one, the above steps will not help you.

So how do you create a second "nameless" file?

1. Follow the first 3 steps mentioned above.

2. Release the ALT key. Again repeat the first 3 steps.

Compressing 1GB Data into 1MB,an exciting live trick demonstrated here. Really it is possible with the KGB Freeware (Open source) software.

The procedure is very simple.In general you can compress the data in two ways.
1) KGB format
2) ZIP format

Everyone knows the ZIP format. I am here to tell you which is better and useful. If you do it in KGB format it takes 5-6 hours on a 256mb RAM to compress 1 GB data/movie in less than 10 MB ,even to decompress it takes the same time. ZIP is the commonly used compression type but has some particular disadvantage with respect to this issue,so you need KGB archiver only for this format to decompress. But if you do it in ZIP format it takes 6-7 hours on a 256 MB ram, but I tell you its worth because WINRAR & WINZIP both can decompress it in seconds. Hope now its clear that which format to use and which is better.
How to use KGP software?
1.Double click on the KGP icon and run the application.
2.It asks for which file you want to compress.
3.Select the file.
4.After you select,you get two options in which format you want to compress it.
5.select ZIP format ( I prefer ) and then set compression level to maximum (maximum the compression level , small the size of it will be compressed).
Just ignore the time given below it because it is not the real compression time. There is also an option that you can auto shutdown your computer once the compression is over.So you can go school/college/office & keep it to get compressed.

Organise Your Desktop,Files & Folders in 5 Easy Steps

If your desktop looks something like this then you NEED TO READ THIS POST !

Well the awesome screen shot of the desktop was mine until I realized the reason we have a messy desktop is it so easy to access and we go on adding stuff until we get the annoying windows clean my desktop wizard like an unwanted Garbage Bin !

Not any more….also check out a way to launch your fav. programs faster than searching in start menu ! Well here is how we do it, we are going to create an alternative to desktop !

1) Create a folder which will be your alternative to desktop.

I strongly recommend that you create this Folder other than C: as a matter of fact you should not be using C: to store any personal file since if you need to format your C: all the personal file will be lost !

I am going to call this folder QuickDesk. Make it hidden (By right click properties)

2) Add QuickDesk to task bar

This is best way to access the QuickDesk since it will contain folders (such as Music, Movies, Photos etc)

To add Right click on Taskbar > Toolbars > New Toolbars

Then browse to the location where you have QuickDesk. This adds a toolbar by which you can directly go to the place where you want to go.

As you start using this you will realize how productive this way is !

(Just in case you are wondering what are those folders, there are not default. These are the folders created earlier)

3) Create a shortcut of QuickDesk

You can do this by the usual method by Right - click on the folder Create short cut and then rename the Shortcut to QuickDesk.

Now to add some style choose a icon for the Shortcut By Right click > Properties > Shortcut tab > Change Icon. You can even choose a fancy one by clicking browse.

4) Copy the shortcut to Desktop

We are adding a shortcut to desktop for one main reason is access the QuickDesk while Uploading or downloading you don’t have to browse for QuickDesk instead just go to desktop and click on QuickDesk icon which will take you to the QuickDesk folder.

5) Add this short cut to your Quick launch

You can add to Quick launch by dragging the Shortcut from desktop to the quick launch.

This will be the fastest way to access the QuickDesk !

If you don’t have the Quick launch toolbar than you can add that by Right clicking the taskbar > Toolbars > Quick launch

6) Copy to windows folder

Copy QuickDesk short cut to windows folder ( By default c:windows) so that we can launch by the run (windows + R ) or start > Run

Just by typing QuickDesk and clicking run will launch the folder.

You can use this method for launching folders inside the QuickDesk folder.

How to Start using Quick Desk ?

The idea is to use shortcuts to organize the most accessed data we have. We keep our data disorganized to different reasons such as space availability, convenience etc. So while your Music might be in some folder in d: your photos in several different places !

Create folders for each type of category. Photo, Movies, Videos, Music, downloads to name a few !

Here comes the Oh yeah moment !

So assume you have songs in a folder in d:somefoldermorefolderthefoldersongs (even somplace on your network !)

To make it accessible fast create a shortcut on Music folder by Right click > New >Create shortcut

I even changed the icon of the shortcut to a much more appropriate !

Now check out how easy this is to access in the screen shot below !

Now in winamp to play it just got to desktop > QuickDesk > Music > songs shortcut !

Talking about Winamp you can even launch application like this !

We all know what pain in the neck it is to Go to start and Wait till the Ram Deficient CPU displays the list of programs and then search the one you want ! Keeping the shorcuts on the desktop also adds to clutter to start with !

To add Application to QuickDesk, copy the shortcut from the desktop or program files and paste it in the : QuickDeskprograms

Now check out how easy and FAST it is to launch this way !
